Artist Statement
'There is no abstract art. You must always start with something. Afterward you can remove all traces of reality'. Pablo Picasso.
My work is primarily concerned with a number of key themes including perception, immersion and the interplay between the real and the fake. By taking these themes and combining them with simple artistic processes such as photography, painting, drawing and collage, I have created a series of ‘constructs’ of increasing scale which whilst being dynamic and full of energy, also immerse the viewer in a world of colours, layers and texture evoking emotive feelings such as joy and playfulness. The bright colours and tones are life-affirming and positive, and are not negative or nihilistic.
My work is an evolution of its creation. As my work has evolved, so has my understanding and appreciation of it. My art is not void of reality, but it is not free of fantasy. This is a complex deception, not designed to annoy but to inspire thought. The best images are the ones that provide a context but leave enough room for individual interpretation by the viewer. It allows the viewer to ‘fill in the blanks’ and resonates because it becomes a personal viewing experience. A sense of mystery and intrigue remains, caused by the frail boundary between reality and fakery. Eventually the boundary disappears, revealing a glimpse into the unknown.
